Heating and cooling in Goose Creek runs on a Navy town's rhythm: families move in, summers run long and systems do not get a day off. Aero Air Techs covers the city from our Charleston base, about 30 minutes by road on a 16-mile route. Traffic on US 52 can change that, so we settle timing by phone. This is Berkeley County's most populous city, with 45,946 people at the 2020 census and 17,269 housing units.

Most of Naval Support Activity Charleston sits inside it.

From the 1961 town to Crowfield and the US 52 corridor

Read the data plate before you make a decision, because the city grew in waves. Goose Creek became a town in March 1961, and early subdivisions followed. Westvaco began Crowfield Plantation in the 1980s, one of the first upscale planned communities in the area. Larger communities such as Carnes Crossroads then spread north along US 52.

Each wave has its own issue. A home from the 1960s or 1970s has likely seen several systems and some duct changes. A 1980s Crowfield house is likely on a later outdoor unit, and the ducts may be the original ones. Newer homes up the highway are more likely to be sized tight, with attic air handlers and long flex runs.

By the time a house reaches 40, its outdoor unit has usually been replaced at least once. Check the data plate.

Older units carry one more question. If yours still runs on R-410A, it can keep running and be serviced. If it is older still, ask what refrigerant it uses before you approve a repair.

Navy moves and rented houses near the Weapons Station

Ask who owns the system. A city next door to so much of Joint Base Charleston has plenty of people who arrive on orders and leave on orders, and many of them rent. That creates two common problems.

The first is lost history. New owners and tenants rarely know when the filter was changed or when the coil was last cleaned. The second is deferred care, because few people service a system they plan to leave.

Between tenants, filters get forgotten. A clogged one is behind many no-cool calls.

So if you have just moved in, do three things this week:

  1. Replace the filter and write the date on it.
  2. Photograph the data plate on the outdoor unit.
  3. Run the system in cooling and listen for a hard start, a rattle or a long delay at the vents.

If you own the house and rent it out, a yearly service record gives you something to hand the next tenant.

Heating and cooling in Goose Creek, by what wears out first

Heat is the steady load. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Charleston International Airport show 64.3 days at or above 90°F in a typical year. A system working that hard wears in a familiar order:

  • AC repair for capacitors, contactors and fan motors, the parts that usually go first in July. If you moved in recently, read the data plate first, since the system's age may be news to you.
  • AC maintenance to catch them in spring, with a coil cleaning and drain check. A rented house between tenants is the easy time to book, while nobody needs the cooling every afternoon.
  • AC replacement when age and a major failure line up. Our repair-or-replace guide lays out how to weigh it.
  • Duct repair for loose attic joints and rooms that never catch up. Older subdivisions from the city's early decades can carry original runs, so ask for a look before blaming the outdoor unit. If you find heavy debris, read about air duct cleaning.
  • Heat pump repair when mornings turn cold and the auxiliary heat starts running the bill up. A sudden jump in the power bill after the first cool week usually points here.
  • Furnace replacement for older gas homes around Crowfield where the original unit is tired. Check the city's permit list first, since it spells out what needs a permit, and keep your data plate photo handy.

Does a heating and air swap need a city permit?

Yes. Goose Creek says so plainly. The city's Do I Need a Permit sheet lists installing or replacing heating and air units or equipment, and installing ductwork, as mechanical work that requires one. The same sheet says any contractor working on a structure in the city needs a current city business license.

The Building Permits Division is at 519 N. Goose Creek Blvd., and applications go through the city's online portal. Ask any contractor who holds the permit and confirm their license on the SC LLR lookup.

The city's construction packet lists Berkeley Electric Cooperative's office on Spring Hall Drive among its outside contacts. That does not settle who serves your address, so read your own bill before you look up a rebate.

What should you have ready when you call from Crowfield or up US 52?

Keep it short. Give us the address, what the system is doing and whether you own or rent. We are open 24 hours, 7 days a week, and we will be plain about timing given the drive up US 52. Heavy rain matters as well, since Berkeley County's closure list has carried flooded roads in Goose Creek. Then we test first and quote before work begins, so you see the options before anyone starts.

Nearby, Hanahan sits closer to our base, and the wider map is on the service areas page.

Questions about Goose Creek

How long is the drive to Goose Creek?

About 30 minutes by road from our Charleston base, on a 16-mile route. US 52 and traffic around the base can move that either way, so treat it as a map figure. Give us your address, including whether you are near Crowfield or farther up the highway, and we will talk timing.

Do I need a city permit to replace my heating and air unit?

Yes, by the city's own list. Its Do I Need a Permit guide puts installing or replacing heating and air units, and installing ductwork, on the permit side. It also says contractors need a current city business license for any work on a structure in Goose Creek. Ask to see both.

I rent near the base. Who should call for repairs?

Check your lease, then call your landlord or property manager first. Most leases put repairs on the owner, and an unapproved job can leave you paying for it. Change the filter and check the breaker before you call, since those are usually yours. If the owner wants us there, we are happy to explain the fault to both of you.

Is my Crowfield system worth repairing?

It depends on the age, the part and the refrigerant. Read the data plate for the install date, then compare one repair against what the next few years probably hold. A newer unit with a failed capacitor is an easy repair. An old one with a failed compressor deserves a harder look.
